Choosing wine can sometimes be a daunting task. With so many options and prices, so many vineyards and styles, confusion starts to set in. But Callicoon Wine Merchant’s carefully edited selection of moderately priced, terroir-driven, organic wines from around the world narrows the field just enough to make picking one a pleasure. At Robin Mailey’s shop, the wines are arranged by taste profile—crisp, lush, rustic—and 90% of the bottles are priced between $15 and $17.
Mailey also owns Windy Hill Cheese Shop, a second business housed on the premises that sells a diverse selection of international cheeses and local gourmet products. It doubles as a wine bar, with a menu of wines by the glass, craft beers and artfully composed cheese plates. This officially makes Callicoon Wine Merchant the perfect place to while away a leisurely summer afternoon with friends.
Mailey grew up in Newport, RI, and spent his nights learning the restaurant trade. He claims it was a combination of the pressure, artistic creativity and over-indulgence of that chaotic industry that pulled him in.After 20 years of being in the business in New York City—14 as the owner and chef of his own restaurant, The Market Café—he and his wife moved to the Catskills to raise their daughter. Now settled in Callicoon, he refers to his local community as an extended family. Every year Mailey looks forward to rosé season, because he considers pouring a glass of Provençal rosé anywhere in Sullivan County to be the very best part of summer.
