If you make your first antique deal at the age of eight, having your own store seems just a matter of time. Lee Hartwell’s parents were avid collectors of antiques and, with their many reference books always lying open around the house, it didn’t take him long to start recognizing what was valuable. So it was hardly a surprise when he opened up shop first in New York City in 1989, then in Providence, RI, in 1992, and finally in Callicoon, NY, in 2008.
Hartwell arrived in the area to attend a friend’s party and wound up staying put. “The very first day I stepped onto Lower Main Street in Callicoon,” he says, “I just knew I would open a shop here.” At Lee Hartwell Antiques & Custom Framing, centrally located on the town’s charming Main Street, he offers an eclectic array of time-honored home furnishings, lighting, fine art and estate jewelry from the Victorian, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts and Mid-Century Modern eras. Custom framing services are also available.
Hartwell remains inspired by the community’s laid-back spirit, the good food in town and all the interesting people he has met, many of whom have become regulars at his store. This summer, he looks forward to grilling outdoors, playing ball with his dog Tricksi and enjoying bonfires with friends, late afternoon wine at Callicoon Wine Merchant and the amazing Catskill sunsets. Not to mention antiquing.
